Our Story

Hi! We’re the Getting Down in the Kitchen/ Cooking with Carter family. Carter was born in June of 2023. We were beyond excited to meet him. The day went a little different than planned. Carter was born via c section and immediately was sent to the NICU for extremely low blood sugar and some other concerning issues. I had no idea what was happening at the time. The first picture I saw of Carter, I was so confused. He didn’t look like my other children, he looked like he had Down syndrome.


The nurses let us know that he had some indicators of Down syndrome, but didn’t know for sure until the test came back. I knew though. It was extremely hard, I felt so much anger, guilt, denial, all the things. But when they took me to the NICU and I got to hold him for the first time, I felt so much love for him and I wanted to fiercely protect him and give him the world.


After A month stay in the NICU we were finally able to bring him home.


Carter is coming up on two and he’s been an incredible blessing to our family. He is the glue and everyone’s favorite. We feel so blessed to have him. Of course there are still ups and downs, but it’s a journey, a journey we choose to take every day.


I started an instagram to help special needs moms live their healthiest and best lives @gettingdowninthekitchen. It’s been fun to do it with Carter. My little boyfriend for life!
